Description:

Unreal Engine is at the forefront of virtual production, leading with advanced real-time 3D creation tools for photo-real visuals and immersive experiences. This introductory hand-on course will give participants a working understanding of Unreal Engine 5 real-time toolset. Through a series of demonstrations, participants will learn the interface and navigation, how to import data, landscape and foliage tools, creating materials, lighting, using Sequencer and the basics of using Post Process Volume. 

Classes will engage participants through project based in-engine hands-on practice and discussions on creating high quality assets that support a wide range of content production stages.

NOTE: This course will be delivered in-person at the New Media Manitoba office location. It is focused on the basics of Unreal Engine 5 and does not cover real-time compositing techniques with an LED wall or green screen.

Outline:

Week 1: User Interface and Navigation

  • Explore and Navigate User Interface: Content Browser, World Outliner, Details Panel, Viewport and Place Actors Window
  • Working with Quixel Bridge and Epic Marketplace
  • Identifying industry standard Project Management and Redirectors
  • Placing and Transforming Objects

Week 2: Landscape and Foliage Tool Basics

  • Introduction to Landscape Tool and Sculpting Brushes
  • Developing details through Sculpting Techniques
  • Using Landscape Technical Guide for Optimization
  • Exploring Foliage Tool Settings for Scattering Assets

Week 3: Material Editor and Environment Lighting

  • Developing your first Master Material
  • Adjusting Quixel Megascan Assets with Material Instances
  • Introduction to types of Light Actors with the Environment Light Mixer
  • Utilizing Emissive Materials

Week 4: Sequencer and Post Process Effects

  • Basics of Sequencer and Animation
  • Integrating Actors into a Level Sequence, Camera, Characters and Lighting Effects
  • Introduction to Spawnable Actors
  • Basics of the Post Process Volume and Colour Grading Effects

Instructor:

Tamara Abas is an Unreal Engine Authorized Instructor who is passionate about mentoring and growing the creative industry within her community. She has experience working on a variety of virtual production projects, developing tools and workflows. Tamara is always growing her skill set and adapting to the ever-evolving industry.
